How Sexual Harm Impacts Domestic Abuse Experiences and Recovery

July 14 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

This interactive training session explores the profound and lasting impact of sexual harm across the lifespan. It places particular emphasis on the links between child sexual abuse and later victimisation, including the increased risk of experiencing further sexual harm within intimate partner and domestic abuse contexts. The session also examines how these experiences shape recovery journeys and the role of practitioners in supporting healing and progress.

Research consistently highlights the scale and significance of this issue. Studies suggest that approximately 1 in 5 women and 1 in 20 men experience sexual abuse during childhood. Survivors of child sexual abuse are significantly more likely to experience re-victimisation in adulthood, with some research indicating they are 2–4 times more likely to experience sexual violence or domestic abuse later in life. Within domestic abuse contexts, sexual violence is often underreported but highly prevalent—estimates suggest that between 40–60% of individuals experiencing domestic abuse will also experience sexual coercion or assault by a partner.

The impact of sexual harm within intimate relationships is complex and far-reaching. Survivors frequently experience trauma responses including PTSD, shame, dissociation, and difficulties with trust and intimacy, all of which can compound the dynamics of domestic abuse and create additional barriers to seeking support. Evidence also shows that individuals subjected to sexual violence within relationships often experience more severe and prolonged abuse, and may face increased risks to both physical and mental health.

Despite these challenges, recovery is possible. Research highlights the importance of trauma-informed, survivor-centred approaches, with strong emphasis on safety, empowerment, and relational support. Practitioners play a critical role in recognising the signs of sexual harm, responding appropriately, and facilitating pathways to recovery.

The aims of the session:

  • Understand the impact of child sexual abuse on adult relationships
  • Develop an understanding of the impact of sexual harm which occurs in domestic abuse relationships
  • Describe the impact upon victims/survivors who experience sexual abuse within an intimate partner relationship
  • Identify what works in response to supporting individuals who have experienced intimate partner violence

This session CPD accredited and has limited space. To book your place please do so via PODS here.
